The Grumpiness of the long-distance traveller
Not one of my better travel days.
Left the wonderful Best Western (USD77 a day wonderful) at 6am this morning after getting up at 4:30 (sleeping-in anxiety means I set three alarm clocks and wake up before all of them. Was at Marquette airport at 6:45 for an 8:25 flight. Even had time for the taxi driver to stop for coffee on the way.
8:25 Flight boarded on time. Flight taxied on time. Flight stopped on the runway and returned to base not on time. Microswitch on the steering column not working. Luckily American eagle have a maintenance hangar at Marquette. Passengers deplaned and plane towed to hangar.
11:00 they find another problem, but think they can fix it. Passengers offered coffee and trail mix.
11:50 plane returns to the terminal.
12:30 plane finally takes off. Arrive o’Hare 12:45 Chicago time. Plane to Hong Kong takes off 14:20. arrive at gate 15 minutes before they start boarding. No breakfast, no lunch, stress level significant. Calm down. Get on plane. Yay 16h flight, business class service, food, movies, Chardonnay, time to relax.
Cathay (no idea why) decide to defer meal service until a “suitable hour”. 5h after take-off, still no meal service. Now 18h since last ate. Not happy. Have eaten 1/2 smoked salmon and cream cheese bagel and 2 x onion crackers – “business class snacks”. Now stressed about hopelessly unbalanced diet. Do not like desperation food…attempt to watch “Cowboys and Aliens”. Yes, it is a really cliched cowboy movie with aliens in it. I lasted 30 minutes. Watched “Horrible Bosses”, half of “The Perfect Host” and about a third of “Tron Legacy”.
21:30 Marquette time, finally eat. 24h since last meal (not counting bagels and crackers). Hunger and tiredness have driven me to tears.
Finally arrive Hong Kong. Seek shower. Only first class lounge has shower. Find shower. Feel slightly more human. Attempt duty free. Discover duty free liquor cannot be imported to Australia. Lose interest and buy secret santa gifts instead. Return to gate. Check emails. Make final flight home. Have given up on bad movies and am watching entire season 1 of “Absolutely Fabulous”.
