(O)possums and cultural imperialism
I was half-watching an ad on TV this evening. For some reason, this man who was cooking on a barbecue got his kids a possum to keep them busy. So the kids said “it’s dead” and the man said “no it’s just playing dead”. And the visuals were of an opossum playing dead (which apparently they do), and then reviving and carrying on.
So I am watching this, and I thought to myself – “American opossum, that’s just cultural imperialism, should be an Australian possum”. And then I noticed that they were all talking in generic North American English, and I thought “huh, can’t even be bothered to hire Australian actors, never mind the local content rules.”
And then I looked around and realized the awful truth – I am in Canada. And for three minutes there, I had no idea what hemisphere I was in.
It took 32 hours to get here – I watched seven movies and got almost no sleep – I’m allowed to be slightly confused…
