Livistona, have we been introduced?
It appears that the iconic Palm Valley cabbage palm (Livistona mariae) may not, in fact be an archaic remnant of the Miocene era. Recent research from the Royal Society as picked up and discussed by CSIRO suggests that the endemic palms of arid central Australia could have been introduced by humans migrating from Roper River about 15 000 years ago. So how do we treat it now as a “non-native” species (at least in its current range)? Like lantana, or like the Lone Pine?
